GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Attempt Event 2021!

What do these three young men have in common?

They just submitted their video to smash a world record!

Skills Ontario is excited to announce a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ attempt event. We would like to invite everyone to participate in making history by helping them to break the record for Largest Online Video Chain of People Passing and Using a Screwdriver!

The call went out yesterday to Sudbury Catholic staff and students to help Skills Ontario. Both staff and students have been eagerly participating.  Kent MacNeill, remote learning teacher assigned the challenge to all his grade 7 & 8 science students!

Anyone of any age, across the province can join the fun!  Skills Ontario’s minimum goal is to receive 251 individual video submissions.

In order, to secure the record please make sure all guidelines are followed,  refer to the   Educational Guide & Attempt Guidelines and video. For additional information, refer to: Guinness World Record Attempt 2021

All participants must sign a photo/video release form when uploading their video. Participants 18 years and younger must have a parent/guardian sign the form.

All participants will be added into a draw for a chance to win 1 of 20 $50 prizes!

Deadline to submit is June 2nd 2021!

Cards Athletics receives sage advice from Sports Broadcaster Adnan Virk of DAZN and MLB Network

This week, Cards Athletics was in for the perfect treat. Sports broadcaster Adnan Virk joined them for a Zoom presentation.

Virk who is a Canadian, lives in the US and currently works for DAZN, a multi streaming platform new to the North American market and is featured on the MLB or Major League Baseball network.

He has previously worked at EPSN, TSN, The Score and Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment covering the Raptors and the Leafs.

Adnan has covered sports like baseball, football, hockey, boxing and basketball but he is also passionate about film and reading.

Virk joined three physical education classes to insights on perseverance. He gave advice on following your dreams all the while recognizing your insecurities. He also reminded students that faith, family and friends can get them through anything life throws at them.

Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way!

St. Charles College student finds new transportation to get him to and from school.

Griffin Whorley has been getting creative with his school transportation to and from St. Charles College this week.

The grade ten student’s bus has been cancelled since the onset of school so he has been riding his bike daily.

When the bike suffered a flat this week and required a shop tune-up – the choice was either to walk or find a new alternative.

Griffin is on day two of pedaling his go kart to school.

He dusted it off in the shed earlier this week. It was an old gift from his grandpa from when he was about five years old.

He parks it and locks it at the bike lock-up which is a sight to see.

Not to worry – Griffin does wear a helmet, these pictures were just quick poses before he set off for home after a hard days work.

e-Learning Summer School For Secondary

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is proud to announce that we will be providing several new summer learning opportunities this year. We are now accepting registration for our Summer e-Learning Courses for secondary students. There will be several other learning opportunities offered this summer through the school board; this is just the first group of learning opportunities available.

Summer e-Learning Courses for Secondary Students

Summer e-Learning courses are full-credit courses available to students who are currently registered in grades 9-12. These courses are taught by qualified Ontario Teachers across the province. These courses are fully online and typically consist of a blend of online lessons and independent work. Students who are successful in a summer e-Learning course typically commit to working 4-6 hours a day from Monday-Friday for the 4 weeks that the summer course is offered. Secondary Summer e-Learning courses cover the same range of content that is typically covered during a full semester course in a condensed timeline.

Courses are offered in English, Math, Religion, Science, Social Studies, and the Humanities for students currently in grades 9-12.

The Sudbury Catholic District School board will be offering Grade 11 Religion (HRT3M), Grade 12 Religion (HRE4M), and Careers/Civics (CHV2O/GLC2O). Co-op may also be available in some circumstances.

Students must have the prerequisites to register for a course over the summer. For more information about specific courses, please contact the guidance contact at your school:

St. Charles College students take part in Family Literacy Day

While students in the secondary panel at St. Charles College are busy doing lots of reading and writing during exam week, many of the elementary students stopped to read for Family Literacy day.

Family Literacy day is held annually on January 27th. The day was created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 to encourage families to spend twenty minutes per day enjoying reading together.

Students in Mrs. Slywchuk and Mrs. Bock’s classes were especially excited about their novel selections. Even their teachers stopped to model good reading.

According to www.scholastic.ca, one of the main benefits of reading is to develop vocabulary and language skills. Secondly, it allows them to use their imagination.

As well, 76% percent of young readers feel inspired to believe in themselves when they read.

Students Participate in First Ever SCDSB Model UN Conference

Groups of students sit in their respective country seats

Secondary students from all four
secondary schools were able to participate in the first ever SCDSB Model UN
Conference hosted at St. Charles College. The event was an opportunity for
local and international students to come together and unpack an issue from an
international perspective.

Approximately 75 students participated
in this first-ever event! Students worked to find possible solutions within the
United Nations framework to resolve the global human trafficking crisis. The
event leveraged diversity and encouraged participants to develop global
citizenship skills!

Students were awarded in the following
categories:

Best Delegates: Liam Couisneau (St. Charles College) and Rosaria Nero (St. Benedict)

Honourable mentions: Madison Penrose (Bishop Alexander Carter) and Amy Godin (Marymount Academy)

Best international delegates: Ryan Dinh (St. Charles College) and Zihao Wang (St. Benedict)

Attendance Awareness Poster winners announced!

Sudbury Catholic Schools and the Attendance Counsellors held the annual poster contest in October. In order to engage students from FDK to Grade 12, the poster contest promoted the importance of regular school attendance. It was a huge success with nearly 500 students participating!

St. Charles College student Dana Lewis was crowned Miss Wikwemkoong

St. Charles College Student Dana Lewis was crowned Miss Wiikwemkoong during the Wiikwemkoong Cultural Festival in August. Dana, who is the goalie for the St. Charles College Girls Hockey team used her hockey skills in the talent portion of the pageant. She also won first place in the biography portion helping her to earn her Crown. Dana stated that she is very excited and honoured to represent her community at various events, celebrations and pow wows as Miss Wiikwemkoong. She was invited to speak about the missing and murdered Indigenous Women at the Sisters in Spirit Conference in October.

In Dana’s biography she wrote: “Giving back to the community is a big part of who I am. At a young age I was provided with the teachings and knowledge for sewing and over the past years I started teaching young girls ages 7-12 how to sew. I facilitate many workshops showing the youth how to make their own regalia, hand drum bags, ribbon skirts. By teaching these youth, I’m passing down my knowledge of our culture for the next generation. I believe that we should be encouraging our next generations to continue with these teachings so they can teach the next ones. This is who I am, a daughter, sister, auntie, teammate, role model, teacher. I believe that becoming a leader takes time, and that Miss Wiikwemikoong will provide me with the experience to one day be a strong leader for my community, my people, my nation.”

St. Charles College is proud and honoured to celebrate Dana’s triumph with her, her family and community.
