She continually promotes other teachers in their endeavors to obtain grants for experiential learning opportunities and supports and encourages teacher innovation that will enhance student learning. Through her recent role of Principal of the Remote Learning School, Megan has also helped facilitate a virtual learning environment that is engaging and focused on student success.

Join us and Learn About the Benefits of Financial Literacy for Your Child

The Parent Involvement Committee is very pleased to once again to support virtual learning sessions throughout the winter and spring.

Financial Literacy is a new section in the grade 1 to 8 math curriculum. Students will not only learn to count and recognize money, but they will also be exposed to saving, budgeting, and even investing. This will ensure that they become more self-sufficient and financially stable at a young age, and provides an opportunity for students to develop a good relationship with money so that they may set realistic financial goals for themselves in the future. This session will explore financial literacy and the benefits of incorporating it into the classrooms at Sudbury Catholic Schools!

St. Charles College students send messages of positivity to the residents of Amberwood Suites in Sudbury

Boy holds up sign

When news this week worsened for the staff and residents at Amberwood Suites in Sudbury, Mrs. Sauve in grade 7 at St. Charles College acted swiftly.

She wanted to use her students to help raise the spirits of residents who continue to be quarantined to their rooms at the retirement residence due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

To date, four of its residents have died in the last two weeks of the deadly virus. The students created pen pal letters for the residents and uplifting and inspirational messages, quotes and pictures.

Mrs. Sauve says “Right now our community and these residents need light and love and it comes authentically and genuinely from the students.”

The letters will be delivered this week.

Principal Aaron Barry is proud of the students and their empathy and kindness. “It’s these small gestures that make our students grow up into wonderful people.”

Join our Virtual Dance Party!

Two kids dancing

On Tuesday evening, families participated in an Hour of Code while participating in a dance party and learning about coding all at the same time! This session was designed for families to learn the basics of coding without even using a device.

Students learned that events are a useful way to control when an action happens and can be used to make multiple things act in sync. In programming, events can be used to respond to a user controlling it (like pressing buttons or clicking the mouse) and that events can make programs more interesting and interactive.

Following, our teachers taught various dance moves such as the “Star, Dab, High Clap and This & That”. Then, families were asked to create their own unique dance algorithm and to share their finished products in order to have a chance to win a family prize pack.

There is still time for families to join our next Dance Party on December 10th at 6pm. To register go to: Learning Support Hub for Students and Parents.

St. Charles College Organizes Face Mask Fundraiser for Sudbury Food Bank

Students and staff present a cheque

The canned food drive is synonymous with St. Charles College. Each year the staff, students, alumni and feeder schools collect cans and raise money in support of the Sudbury Food Bank.

The mission is to fill the shelves in preparation for the cold and dark winter months. The drive started in the mid 1980s but this year it all looked rather different.

Principal Aaron Barry says “students could not go door to door with Covid precautions. Our student council team under the leadership of Mrs. Demore, Mrs. Humphrey and Mrs. Montgomery opted to sell Cardinal face masks in support of the charity.”

The face masks were sold to students online to avoid cash transactions and were created in collaboration with local business Covergalls Workwear raising $4500 for the Sudbury Food Bank.

Normally the drive brings upwards of 100 000 food items to the food bank each year making it the largest single contributor to the food bank.

The school recognizes that the donation is much smaller this year given the circumstances and is urging people to remember the food banks this holiday season and beyond.
